Whether it’s swimming every day or investing in his passion for Flybuys, Dale knows consistency is key. He puts his points success down to two things: being savings savvy and cashing in on surveys. So when he’s not on the lookout for new swimming spots, you’ll find him collecting easy points with his opinions.
Dale’s strategy is worth its weight in Velocity Points – his stash is taking him to London for a holiday! Here’s hoping he’s got cold-weather swimmers.
Q: Have you always had a savvy attitude towards spending and saving?
A: The biggest turning point for me was when I started swimming regularly in 2014 while recovering from a broken leg. Since then, I’ve gradually adjusted my lifestyle so the main focus every day is swimming and everything else comes second. I feel like I’m on a permanent working holiday and love travelling to new swimming spots all over Australia. Focusing on free activities in the great outdoors helps me avoid spontaneous spending, and my finances have improved as a result.
Q: What's your secret to success?
A: I complete surveys during my commute to and from work. The subjects are always interesting and varied. They’re a great distraction – and even if you do one at a time, the points really add up. More than half the points I’ve accumulated in the past year are from the online surveys, and I didn’t have to spend a cent.
Q: How does Flybuys fit into your life? Any benefits you’re busting to share?
A: My points go towards travel so it feels like my weekly shop is part of the journey to my next flight to London. I’ve got enough points right now to pay for the way there and part of the way home.
Q: How does it feel to be part of the Flybuys 50?
A: I saw the Flybuys 50 last year and thought, “Wouldn’t it be cool if I ended up in that one day?” The very next year, here I am! This is one of best things I’ve been able to do since becoming a member.
Q: What advice would you give to a new Flybuys member who wants to follow in your footsteps?
A: Find surveys that are suitable for you and make sure you complete them. And download the app! Remember: every dollar you spend is a point you get through Flybuys.
Q: What inspires you to keep collecting points?
A: I regard Flybuys as a lucrative hobby. It’s a few points at a time doing these surveys, but it adds up to hundreds and hundreds of dollars. It’s exciting to know that you can get something as big as a trip to London with it.
