After crunching the numbers, running opt-in surveys and doing rounds of interviews to learn more about them, we found 50 members sent us in their snazzy selfies so we could put faces to the names, and 10 lucky members got to be part of a fancy photoshoot. Antony knows how to put the ‘fly’ in Flybuys. He’s an air traffic controller, passionate traveller and avid Velocity Frequent Flyer. When he’s not monitoring the Darwin skies, you’ll find him jet setting with his Velocity Points or heading out on weekend adventures with his son.
How does Antony pile his points stash sky high? He keeps his Velocity Frequent Flyer Auto Transfer on, his Flybuys app on hand and his Coles Rewards Mastercard in his back pocket.
What are your sneaky methods for picking up points?
My favourite way is the four-week bonus offers. Each week, there’s an email that tells me about the minimum spend. I’ll set a reminder for when I’m going shopping, hit the minimum spend and then boom – bonus points! Sometimes I might have to buy a little extra. So my wife and I will get non-perishables, like honey or nappies for the little one. Then I use my Coles Rewards Mastercard and Coles No Annual Fee Mastercard to make the most of their Flybuys offers too.
Tell us about your passion for Excel spreadsheets. Do you have one for your Flybuys game plan?
How much time do you have? I could talk about this all day. So, I have a finance spreadsheet with a dedicated a tab for Flybuys. I’ll put the weekly spend offers in there so I can make sure I’m spending enough to get the bonus points each week. It means I can track my all expenses and make sure they’re feeding into my Flybuys points. It’s nice to have that record.
You’ve got quite the Velocity Frequent Flyer Points haul. What’s your dream holiday destination?
I’ve got lots of family in England that I haven’t seen in a long time. So that would be a dream to visit them again. Flybuys helps me save money and I’d love to put those savings towards a trip to Africa. I’ve already been there, but I want to take my family. Maybe we can go on a safari. I’ll wear the shirt from my Flybuys 50 photoshoot!
Does your partner reap the rewards of your Flybuys action plan?
My partner loves it. We actually booked a babymoon on Velocity Frequent Flyer Points. She leaves me to the shopping because she knows I’ll find the best deals. I’ve used Velocity Points to take us to visit family in Sydney, too. So in a way, Flybuys has found its way into all aspects of my life.
If you could start your Flybuys journey again, what would you change?
I would have got my Coles Rewards Mastercard earlier. And I would start using the app earlier to find out what’s on offer. For a while, I was only using my card. Looking back, I lost so many points just by not activating offers on the app.
What inspires you to keep collecting points?
I was always collecting points for myself. Now it’s like a game that I get to recruit people into playing, so they can get the benefits too. I even tell my taxi driver about Flybuys. Now that I’m in the Flybuys 50, I get bragging rights too.
