We started our nationwide search by looking for members who show off the Flybuys attitude in all sorts of ways — not just the points-rich. After crunching the numbers, running opt-in surveys and doing rounds of interviews to learn more about them, we found 50 members sent us in their snazzy selfies so we could put faces to the names, and 10 lucky members got to be part of a fancy photoshoot. Most people only get one true love. Michael has three: his family, trains and Flybuys. If he’s lucky, he gets to combine all three for the perfect weekend away. From the Hunter Valley Steamfest to the smallest train station in Australia, his points have flown him and his family to some of the best train exhibitions across the country.
When it comes to building his points fortune for flights, Michael has a one-track mind. He keeps his Auto Transfer on, his Flybuys app open and his Flybuys card in the front of his wallet. All aboard the Flybuys Fortune Express!
How would you describe your Flybuys game plan?
It’s literally as simple as using the app. I treat it like my Facebook page. I’ll log into it at least once a day to see if any offers come up. Then I’ll try and shop strategically to get them.
You’re a hot shot traveller with Velocity Frequent Flyer Points always in your carry-on. What are your top tips for members looking to take a points-paid hoilday?
I keep my Auto Transfer on at all times, so that my Flybuys points immediately convert to Velocity Points. Then it’s all about booking in advance or waiting for a sale. You have to make the points work for you. In fact, it’s helped me move my Velocity membership from red to platinum in less than a year. The beauty of it is that as long as I keep shopping and keep my Auto Transfer on, I’m all sorted.
Where do you go for your Flybuys inspiration?
Always the app. It’s great for when I’m at work or travelling and I can check in and see where my points are at and what offers I have. I travel a lot to steam engine excursions around Australia, so I have the opportunity to use my Flybuys card at different stores. I don’t actively hunt for new hacks, but it’s good to know that I can always count on the app when I’m looking for fresh ways to boost my points.
What advice would you give to a new member looking to make the most of Flybuys?
As soon as you sign up, download the app. Don’t become complacent with it or let yourself drop off after a few shops. I find that the more I shop, the more offers seem to come my way. It’s about making it work with your regular shopping, whether that’s groceries or fuel.
What’s your next big rewards goal?
I’d love to take an overseas trip. I’m from the UK, so I’d love to collect enough points to be able to get tickets home for my whole family of five
How has your Flybuys game plan changed since you first became a member?
The app has changed since I first started with it. It encourages you to look for specials and do more things that will benefit you in terms of amassing the points. In a nutshell, my game plan has changed as the app's evolved.
